Formerly: National President, Australian Institute of International Affairs; Sugden Fellow, Queens College Melbourne; Chair, Australia-India Council ; Co-convenor, Australia-Indonesia Dialogue. 

1968 -2009 DFAT: including Ambassador to Vietnam; Mexico;Thailand; the United States; Indonesia; Japan; and High Commissioner to India. In Canberra, Chief of Staff to Foreign Minister, Chief Legal Officer and Deputy Secretary.

1964-67: Barrister at Law, London and Attorney Shearman and Sterling , New York .

Educated: Cambridge University MA LLB
