RCS Council member, Dr Martin Hess, launches his book on Police Diplomacy at the Australian War Memorial
RCS ACT Council Member Martin Hess’ book on “The Politics of Police Diplomacy - The Australian Experience” was launched in May in a well attended event at the Australian War Memorial hosted by its Director Matt Anderson PSM and featuring ANU Professor Bill Maley.
The book is a ground breaking study of the crucial but often unknown work of the Australian Federal Police in peacekeeping across the world from Cyprus to Timor Leste. The author has himself been involved in several of these missions and brings important insights from this experience, as highlighted by his academic supervisor Professor Maley in his remarks at the launch. Many of these missions have been in Commonwealth nations such as Cyprus, Solomon Islands and PNG/Bougainville.
War Memorial Director Matt Anderson emphasised the substantial contribution the book provides to our understanding of peacekeeping, and the key role of police in these missions. He also noted this was a historic event as the first book launch in the new AWM bookshop set beside the stunning new entrance to the War Memorial. Congratulations Martin on a great book and great event.
